
TruLight vs Haven Lighting: What Austin Homeowners Should Ask Before Signing
I own the TruLight dealership here in the Austin area, and I have an obvious financial interest in you choosing my system. Weigh what follows accordingly. What I can do is be specific about where the real decision points are, cite the other company's own published material rather than characterizing it secondhand, and tell you what to demand in writing from whoever you hire, including me. The two systems solve overlapping problems, and they start from different assumptions about who installs the product and who is responsible when something stops working in year six. That second assumption is where they diverge.
What Haven publishes about itself
Haven's homepage describes permanent roofline lighting with app control and automation. I take that at face value. The document I would actually read closely is the terms page.
Haven's general terms list a one year product warranty, with longer exceptions for specified L Series products whose part numbers begin with 9 or 6. If the roofline system on your quote is the X Series, note that the terms I am citing do not establish that the L Series exception applies to it. So before you compare coverage at all, get the exact component part numbers on your quote and the warranty that covers those part numbers from the seller in writing.
Two things about that matter more than any headline number.
- A coverage term that applies to one product line does not automatically apply to another. Match the warranty language to the part numbers on your quote, not to the brand.
- Covering components is not the same as covering the job. Whether labor is included, what the exclusions are, who performs local service, and how a claim is initiated are all separate questions that a coverage figure does not answer. Ask for those answers in writing from whoever is bidding the work.
I am not accusing Haven of hiding anything. Terms pages and product lines change. Confirm the current written specifications and warranty directly with the local dealer or seller before you sign, and treat that written document as what governs, not any web page including this one.
A light rating is not a warranty term
For reference on our side, TruLight publishes a 100,000 hour light rating. A light rating is a manufacturer's figure for the light source. A warranty is an enforceable promise about parts, labor and time. The two get blurred often enough in this business that it is worth separating them yourself on every quote you receive. Our current terms live at /warranty, and those terms, not the rating, are what you would hold me to.
While you are reading terms, estimate your own nightly use instead of assuming the system will run only on holidays. Any coverage written as a term of years and a term of hours together depends on how much you actually run the lights, so know your own number before you compare two documents.

Ask the Haven seller to fill in the missing specifications in writing. I sell against Haven, so I am the last person who should be characterizing specifications Haven has not published in the material I am citing.
Why the warm white channel is the thing I would actually look at
A TruLight RGBW node carries six LEDs: three RGB and three dedicated warm white. Warm white is produced by dedicated emitters rather than mixed from color channels. Different systems can render warm white differently, and on Hill Country limestone and stucco that shows up more than it does on a flat painted surface. See both systems at night on stone or stucco before deciding.
The combination to watch for is substantial limestone or stucco, deep eaves, and a long uninterrupted front elevation, because that gives any inconsistency in white tone a lot of surface area to show up on. A mixed material palette does the same thing a different way, putting the white against masonry and painted trim inside the same run.
If warm white is the setting you run most nights and color comes out for holidays, ask to see the warm white in person, at night, on stone rather than on a trade show backdrop.
The question to ask about power injection
Someone will tell you that a higher voltage system automatically means fewer injection points. Do not accept that, from me or from anyone else. It oversimplifies a real engineering constraint.
What actually determines how a run is designed is the combination of wire gauge, the current and connected load on the run, the physical conductor distance, the controller limits, and the manufacturer's stated design rules for that specific product. A system at a higher voltage with undersized wire and a heavy load can easily need more intervention than a lower voltage system that was designed properly.
Ask every bidder, including my company, to show you the run design for your house: where the runs break, where power is introduced, what gauge is used, and what the manufacturer's limits are for that product. Require each of them to measure the elevations and document that design in writing before you sign, so a per foot number is never the whole of what you are buying.
This matters more if your house is one of the long, articulated, multi elevation rooflines common on Hill Country lots. A wide roofline puts more distance between the controller and the far end of the run than a compact suburban front does, and distance is one of the variables that forces design decisions.
Sun and heat
Central Texas UV and summer heat are hard on anything mounted on a south or west facing elevation, and that is true of every brand in this category. Ask concrete questions rather than accepting durability language: what is the mounting method, and what does the written coverage document say about mounting hardware as opposed to electronics.
TruLight uses professionally installed color matched aluminum track, and I will not extend that into performance claims I cannot substantiate. A color matched track is a daytime appearance question as much as a durability one, and daytime appearance is what your HOA and your own eye judge for eleven months of the year.
What I would do in your position
- Get the full written warranty document from every bidder before signing, not a summary. Read the exclusions section first.
- Match the warranty language to the exact part numbers on your quote, not to the brand name.
- Ask directly whether labor is covered, for how long, and who performs the service call.
- Confirm current published specifications with the local dealer for each brand, since terms and product lines change.
- See warm white in person at night on a surface resembling your own.
- Ask for the run design on your specific roofline, in writing.
- Ask who you call in year six, and get a name.
If a bidder gets defensive about any of those, that is information. If I get defensive about any of them, that is information too.
