Is permanent lighting worth it?

If you already pay for seasonal installation, compare several years of that bill with an installed permanent quote. If you use inexpensive DIY strands once a year, permanent lighting may cost more throughout your ownership. Convenience, appearance and lighting beyond December are separate reasons to choose it.

Illustrative budget, not Austin market averages: assume $250 upfront plus $50 each year for DIY replacements; $850 each year for paid seasonal installation and removal; or $5,000 upfront plus a $100 annual service allowance for permanent lights. Annual amounts start in year one. The $100 is a planning allowance, not a TruLight fee or a forecast of repair costs.

Illustrative cumulative lighting budgets
OptionYear 1Year 5Year 10
DIY seasonal$300$500$750
Paid seasonal$850$4,250$8,500
Permanent$5,100$5,500$6,000

These budgets exclude electricity, taxes, financing, inflation and the value of your time. Actual repairs can exceed the allowances. In this example, permanent becomes cheaper than paid seasonal in year seven; DIY remains cheaper. A different quote or annual bill changes that result.

What changes an installed lighting quote?

Use these questions to compare the same work and understand what your quote includes.

Coverage and footage

Compare the same front, side and back sections. Upper peaks and detached structures should be named in the scope, not assumed to be included.

Height and access

Two-story sections, obstacles and hard-to-reach mounting surfaces can change the work required. Confirm these during the site visit.

Controls and future expansion

Confirm the controller locations, zones and any motion sensors in your quote. Discuss later additions before choosing the first phase.

Repairs and preparation

Ask whether fascia repairs, painting or electrical work must be completed separately before installation. List any exclusions in writing.

Warranty and future service

Component coverage and labor coverage have different terms. Ask how a service request is handled and what may be chargeable after the labor coverage ends.

Common Pricing Questions

How much do permanent Christmas lights cost in Austin?

TruLight Austin's typical installed ranges are $3,000-$4,000 for front accent coverage, $4,500-$6,500 for front and sides, and $7,000-$10,000+ for full perimeter coverage. Roofline length, height, access and selected features affect the final quote.

Is the online estimate the final installed price?

No. The online tool gives a preliminary estimate. The consultation confirms measurements, mounting surfaces, access and the sections you want lit before the final scope and price are agreed.

Does permanent lighting always save money?

No. It depends on the installed quote, how long you keep the home, what you currently spend and future service costs. Low-cost DIY seasonal lights can remain the cheaper option. Permanent lighting also provides convenience and year-round use, which are separate from cash savings.

What's included in the installed quote?

The quote covers the selected lighting materials, professional installation, controls and app setup. Confirm coverage, controller count, zones, optional features and exclusions in writing. The lighting modules and control box carry the TruLight lifetime warranty: 100,000 hours for the lights, which is 11.4 years from installation, and five years for the control box. Parts and installation labor are covered for one year from completed installation. The written warranty includes exclusions.

Can I do the front now and add more later?

Discuss the sections you may want later during the consultation. Expansion needs depend on the initial controller, wiring and layout. Ask for a plan for those additions rather than assuming all future work fits the first quote.
